Welcome to the home of Philip Butler & associated musicians; purveyors of modern English folk and other tall tales.......
I have been involved in numerous bands and recording projects since the mid 1990s, but 2009 saw the release of my debut solo album - 'Trapped at Sea'; a vastly dynamic collection of songs covering such topics as death, environmental disasters, love, loss and aeroplane theft. Summerised as 'a modern take on traditional English folk tinged with melancholy and psychedelia', the record tried to explore various acoustic genres without dwelling on any one area. Much to my surprise it received a fair amount of praise from folk critics both nationally and internationally.
The second album entitled ‘Stories For Emily’ was released in early 2010 on Sawmill/Steelmill Records in a limited fabric covered hardback book format. This record delves deeper into, and focuses on the strange world of acid-folk rather than continuing the acoustic genre hopping of my debut.
With my partner Natasha accompanying me on piano accordion we perform live at various folk & acoustic nights in and around our home in Malvern, Worcestershire. A typical set list consists of stripped down arrangements of the album tracks along with some token traditional songs and the odd cover.
